The B Corp Champions Retreat marketplace could have ended like every other trade show does — a dumpster full of single-use board on Sunday night. Instead, GreenLiving and Reframe built it to be used again. Here's what that decision was actually worth, in carbon, with every number shown next to its source.

The show

28 companies, one shared build

The B Corp Champions Retreat brought 28 mission-driven companies to Milwaukee for a shared marketplace — and GreenLiving needed a build that could host all of them without 28 separate booths. The answer: seven shared “Quad” clusters, each housing four companies on the same modular infrastructure — 12 Reframe podiums and 5 shelving systems, doing the work of dozens of one-off builds.

Most trade shows end the same way: fixtures cut from non-recyclable board, used once, in a landfill dumpster by Sunday night. GreenLiving chose differently — modular podiums and shelving built from recyclable Falcon Board and soy-bonded Pure Bond plywood, engineered to come home, get repacked, and go back out. Ten more shows, at least, before this build is done working.

Built fresh, the full run of podiums and shelving carries 110.3 kg CO₂e in materials and fabrication. Because these pieces are staying in rotation for 11 total uses, this one show only carries its share — about 10 kg. The other 100 kg gets paid down over the next ten events, instead of being manufactured, and landfilled, all over again.

The honest twist: reuse isn't free. Getting the podiums home for their next show costs a return-freight trip a single-use build never has to make. Counted every which way — before or after crediting the carrier's purchased offset — this show still comes out ahead. And the further these fixtures travel from here, the bigger that lead gets: the manufacturing avoided by reuse already runs about 13× the size of the freight it took to make reuse possible.

The materials

Paper and soy, not petroleum

Even setting reuse aside, the materials chosen were the lower-carbon call. Falcon Board's paper honeycomb runs a fraction of the footprint of the rigid PVC foam board most single-use booths are cut from — by some published estimates, four to sixteen times lower per pound. Pure Bond's soy-bonded plywood comes in at roughly half the footprint of the conventional MDF a disposable build would typically spec.

Holding materials and quantities identical, the only variable in the table below is reuse vs. single-use. Reusable gear has to “pay” a one-time return-freight cost a landfill-bound build skips — so the honest comparison shows both a net figure (crediting the carrier's purchased offset) and the gross figure without it.

“Net” credits the carrier's purchased offset on the return freight leg; “Gross” does not. Baseline holds materials/quantities identical to the actual build — single-use, landfilled on-site, no return freight.

Material choice — a conservative floor, not the full picture

Presented as a range, not a single number — the exact spec a competing single-use build would have used is genuinely unknowable. This gap is on top of, not included in, the reuse savings above.

LTL freight factor applied to both outbound and return legs

EPA 2025 GHG Emission Factors Hub (0.186 kg CO₂/short ton-mile, shared/consolidated freight); the carrier publishes no package-level factor, so the same factor is used as a proxy for the return leg.

.5" Falcon Board rate derived by scaling the worksheet's .25" rate

No published Hexacomb EPD found; the .25" rate (0.736 kg CO₂e/sheet) was linearly scaled to .5" thickness (≈1.472 kg CO₂e/sheet), per the worksheet's own "update with Hexacomb EPD if available" guidance.
