FREESTANDING DISPLAY: LIVITY Hat Rack

LIVITY OUTERNATIONAL: Hat Rack

LiViTY’s Mission is to support a positive, healthy lifestyle. Their products and message reflect values of sustainability and unity. All of our apparel and accessories are designed using organic, renewable and recycled materials and are produced in equitable trade.

This hat rack project ran from mid March till mid June of 2009 and consisted of full concept generation, art generation, prototyping, packaging materials, sourcing, and manufacturing. The job totaled 120 racks, which were held and shipped upon request by Livity to stores around the country.  This rack was made from 70% to 90% postindustrial waste. The rack was fabricated utilizing water based dye for the print, water based waste ink for the wood stain, fast growth Oregon pine and wood scrap from a local canvas stretcher for the posts, waste carpet from InterfaceFLOR for the interior structure, and a passenger car side view mirror for customer viewing. Livity hat racks can be seen in local whole foods markets.

HOW THE CHANGE WAS MADE

Livity has always been committed to producing products that utilize organic materials and fair trade labor. As Levity is such a green company, it was easy for the team at Livity to see the benefit in making their racking system completely from local industrial waste streams. AoSA went through, with the help of the Livity team, three different revisions based on the industrial waste concept. This project was a challenge in waste reclamation as many sources of industrial waste were unreliable. AoSA found Bentley Prince Street the most willing and able to produce a constant supply of waste carpet. Bentley Prince Street, which is an InterfaceFLOR company, proved by their enthusiasm that not only are they a zero impact company but that they also truly care about reducing waste down.
